It has been a bit cold this spring and it is taking a while for the bugs to warm up. I have been on a few hikes but there has not been much bug activity. Lots of wildflowers though – Okanagan sunflowers, shooting star, woodland star, larkspur etc. The bees have been active on sunny days and I have seen a lot of honey bees and mining bees. I was at Munson pond park with a girlfriend on a cold, cloudy, and rainy day in May and we did not find a single bug. However, to our delight, we saw a muskrat taking a swim in the pond and a great blue heron. The “great one” allowed us to take a few pictures before taking off. A walk along Mill Creek on a couple of sunny days was not too shabby on the bug front – I saw a few stink bugs, a stonefly and scarlet malachite beetles. This is the first time I have seen scarlet malachite beetles in the Kelowna area – very nice! They certainly are beautiful beetles. We need the rain in the valley so I am not complaining.
